Parking Policy Game: "The Battle for Parking"

Objective: Create a parking policy that serves your group's interests while negotiating with others to maximize benefits. This policy will be binding for the next 10 years, with serious financial penalties for breaking the rules. Everyone on campus pays the same amount for a parking sticker—$200 per year.

Instructions:

Group Assignment:

You are assigned to one of four groups: Resident Students, Commuter Students, Faculty, or Administration. Your goal is to craft a parking policy that best serves your group's needs and will be enforced for the next decade.

Parking Spots:

Initial Allocation (5 minutes):

As a group, you have 5 minutes to discuss and sketch out a brief plan for how you will allocate your 25 spots. Consider your group's needs and come up with an initial allocation (e.g., "All Premium spots (20) go to faculty. Staff get 10 standard, students get 10 standard. Students otherwise must park in the Economy Lot").

Negotiation Round (10 minutes):

During this round, you can move around and talk to members of other groups to negotiate trades or reallocate spots. You don’t negotiate as a group; everyone in your group is free to negotiate on behalf of your stakeholders. Use this time to adjust your initial plan based on the discussions.

Final Policy (5 minutes):

After negotiations, return to your group and finalize your parking policy. You have 5 minutes to discuss the final allocation and appoint one member of your group to present. Your group will have 2 minutes to explain both the allocation and the rationale behind it.
